Raila is yet to choose a running mate. Something that his opponents in the previous presidential election, President Uhuru Kenyatta and His Deputy William Ruto used to criticise him.

“Hawa wenzetu (Raila and his NASA brigade of Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula) bado hawajajipanga. Hawajui nani atakuwa Rais, nani Naibu,” DP Ruto used to say before the 2017 Elections.

Although Raila and his NASA Co-Principals settled for Kalonzo as the ODM leader’s running mate deep into the electioneering period, the damage may have been done.

Uhuru and Ruto used NASA’s indecisiveness to their advantage as they roped in new blood to their Jubilee  party. As Jubilee traversed the country with an informed strategy, Raila’s NASA were still drawing up a plan.

The same scenario is befalling the former PM again. He is still yet to choose a running mate with a hoard of names at his disposal.

Former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, Narc Kenya Leader Martha Karua, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi are the frontrunners to deputise Raila.

Some leaders are also fronting OKA principals Musalia Mudavadi and Kalonzo Musyoka to join Raila’s Azimio La Umoja and one of them to be the ODM Leader’s running mate.

Raila may be holding his ground and doing his calculations after finding new charm from Central Kenya where the previous three elections he has lost have been won from.

The advantage is that his closest challenger, DP Ruto is yet to publicly name his running mate. The battlefield at the moment looks level.

Whoever will be the first to choose a running mate may just have the upperhand or even not because striking a balance inside your camp may be the more important issue.
