Worldwide Condom Shortage Looms
The World’s biggest producer of condoms, Malaysia’s Karex Bhd has warned of an impending shortage of condoms after a lockdown forced it to shut its production down.
Karex Bhd is one of the world’s leading producers of condoms stationed in Malaysia. Its products make up one in every five condoms globally. It has not produced a single condom its three Malaysian factories for more than a week due to a forced lockdown imposed by the government to halt the spread of the virus.
Speaking in an interview Chief Executive Goh Miah Kiat said, “we are going to see a global shortage of condoms everywhere, which is going to be scary. My concern is that for a lot of humanitarian programs deep down in Africa, the shortage will not just be two weeks or a month. That shortage can run into months”.
Even after lockdown “it will take time to jumpstart factories and we will struggle to keep up with demand at half capacity” he said.
Malaysia is South-Eastern Asia’s worst affected country with a record of 2,161 coronavirus confirmed cases and 26 deaths the lockdown is due to remain until the 14 of April.
