In July 2016, the journal Microsystems & Nanoengineering published research from a team of Tufts University engineers that could take superficial wounds to cutting-edge heights. The researchers created "smart sutures" by embedding various types of thread with tiny electronics, nano-scale sensors, and microscopic fluid channels. These high-tech additions help the stitches collect physical and chemical data on everything from tissue temperature and pH levels to stress and strain. Then, they wirelessly transmit that data to a computer or mobile device so a medical professional can keep tabs on how healing is coming along. The futuristic threads aren't limited to surface wounds, either. With the right materials, they could someday be implanted into organs or even woven into high-tech clothing.
