Children learn a lot from our behaviors, this is why its very important that we try as much as possible to be of good behavior, some of these could come handle in helping to teach them and relate closely with them:
Don't Complain About Everything
As humans, we feel bad when our mistakes are pointed out to us, kids feel the same.
I'm not saying a parent shouldn't point out their child's mistake, but it should be done in the most friendly way. A way where they don't feel bad about themselves afterwards. This certainly builds their self - confidence.
Respect Their Territory.
Ask your children's permission before entering their rooms. Avoid entering their rooms anyhow. Don't just knock and enter their rooms because you own the house. Knock and wait for a verbal permission.
It shows that you not only love them, but respect them. They will learn to do the same when they are to enter your room or any other person's room.
Apologies When Necessary.
Apologizing to your children when you've made a mistake or judged them wrongly would teach them to be humble, polite and responsible too.
Respect Their Views And Ideas.
Don't be sarcastic or make fun of your children when they come up with ideas or views on any given matter. Doing that would hurt their feelings. Even if you "didn't mean it" and was "only joking".
Note that a better way to relate and communicate with children is been able to accept the craziest ideas they bring up.
A plus to your awesomeness would be, to be able to improve their ideas to a better idea.
