A teen whose birthday was Thursday went to his Southern California high school, pulled a pistol from his backpack and shot five classmates and himself in 16 seconds.

One of the suspect’s five victims, a 16 year-old girl, died in hospital around 90 minutes after being shot.

A 14 year-old boy was confirmed as the second victim just before midday PST.

The other three students were wounded and taken by ambulance from Saugus High School in Santa Clarita.

The suspect's name is Nathaniel Berhow.

He also shot himself in the head, but survived his wounds, and is gravely ill in hospital.

The shooter’s dad is reported to have died recently, with one neighbor saying the bereavement ‘put a lot of stress’ on the shooter.

Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Office say they currently have no motive for the horrific shooting, which took place in Los Angeles County, around 30 miles north of LA.

They are currently talking to the suspect’s mother and his 16 year-old girlfriend at a nearby police station.

One student interviewed by NBC4 said she believed those injured had been shot at random, and that the shooter had not targeted specific people.

The shaken girl didn’t know the boy personally, but said: ‘He’s a sick person. He’s a familiar face.’

Another girl told of her terror after she heard three loud noises ‘Boom, boom, boom’ and realized her school was under attack.

Saugus High had scheduled regular active shooter drills to prepare students for a shooting, with children stunned that their worst fears had been realized.
